About Department: The Commerce Department of Chakdha College was set up in the year 1972 with 2 year B.Com. Pass Course. Subsequently it got affiliation to teach 3 years B.Com. Hons. Course in the year 1981. At present it becomes one of the leading departments of the Chakdaha
College with strong faculty members. There are three (out of four sanctioned posts) full-time, two part-time and three Guest faculties, involved in daily teaching-learning process. The faculties of the department have experience of conducting PG study in Commerce, approved by NSOU since the course was started. The department has highly qualified (Ph.D, M.Phil, NET) and sincere faculties to conduct the regular PG course smoothly. At present one of the faculty members, Dr. Amit Kumr Chakkrabarty has been empanelled research supervisor in the Department of Commerce, KU and supervising a research scholar, Mr. Biplab Saha, Assistant Professor in Commerce, RBC, Naihati. A proposal for introducing PG course in Commerce has been sent for approval to the Chairman of W.B. State Higher Education Council on 22 Nov.2016. Teachers of this department take classes regularly for the students of honours and general courses and offer quality education as per capacity. The success rate of the department is very interesting i.e. 90% in the year 2015. Consequently, a large number of students desire to take admission to the department since its inception. Teachers are also intensively engaged in research work and published papers in reputed journals/books on a regular basis. Most of the students of the department are either well-established in different fields or engaged in research work/higher studies in reputed Universities and Professional Institutions. A good number (1997) of books and journals (3) relating to business study are available for the students at the College Library. Department of Commerce has set up a Departmental Library for the students with a hope to make reading habits, create awareness about the recent research and development of the subject, proper utilization of college hours, and transmission and sharing of knowledge. At present, total number of books of seminar library is 103. The department regularly arranges extension lectures on different contemporary issues of commerce by external experts/professors/professionals. Very recent, the Chairman, Institute of Cost Accountants of India, EIRC has delivered a lecture on two topics: a. ‘Marginal Costing & Decision Making’ a. ‘Career Counselling & Skill Development’ at the department. One faculty member of the department, named Dr. Amit Kumar Chakrabarty has successfully completed a minor research project entitled ‘An Empirical Study on Identification of Negative Factors of West Bengal Tourism’ on 3rd June 2016. The department faced a serious problem relating to scarcity of students like other Colleges of Bengal during the first decade of this century. But the situation slightly improved after 2011 onwards though the entrants coming in recent times are qualitatively poor.
The department has organised two extension lecturers by Prof. Basab Chadra Chanda, Associate Professor in Commerce, Ranaghat College, Nadia and by Prof. Debandra Shaw, Assistant Professor, Umesh Chandra College, Kolkata in the year 2015. A career counselling programme was held by the George Telegraph Institute, Kolkata in the year 2015. We have sent a proposal for National Level Seminar on the topic ‘Parental Migration, Paid Child Labour and Human Capital Formation’ to the UGC for approval and funding in the year 2016. The department publishing by the students a Wall Magazine named ‘Distridhara’ to enhance their literary ability form the year 2015. An international level Journal named ‘RAY: International Journal of Multidisciplinary Studies (ISSN 2456-3064)’ is being published by the college in the supervision of Dr. Amit Kuumar Chakrabarty, HOD of this department. He is the one of the Editorial Board Member of that International Journal.
Hope the proposed regular PG course in Commerce will accelerate the standard of the department and the college as a whole. This will also robust the students to build up entrepreneurship and professional skill among, which is one of the objectives of this college. The students of this department and other colleges basically in rural areas will get more opportunity to acquire PG degree in Commerce if the course be started.
